The Wall of Life

My students need 4 aquariums and 3 pump/filters for holding ecosystems and interesting life forms that could be used for their hands on Biology class and experiments.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. N.'s classroom raised $1,064

This project is fully funded

I teach high school biology to predominantly African American students plus a small mix of other minorities. We have a diverse student body with respect to vocational objectives, intellectual prowess, and socioeconomic levels. In addition to preparing highly motivated AP Biology students, we are also responsible for the education of students with limited self confidence and prior academic foundations. We located in a low income area where parental involvement and funding is at a minimal level, at best.

My students really get into hands on projects and real life situations. I am a new teacher and have only the minimum resources. My students love fish, plants, and animals in real life experiences, not pictures from their textbooks. I am constantly trying to find engaging activities that the students can relate a memorable experience to their biology lessons.

What we want to do is start a “Wall of Life”. It will include a fresh water pond with fish and plants, as well as a terrarium with plants and frogs such as a tropical biome. We would also like to have a termite or ant colony in one aquarium. The prior mentioned items are is just for “appetizers”. In addition the “wall” will function not only as small self sustained ecosystems but will create a surplus of different organisms for student driven experiments.

“The Wall” will stress hands-on creative activities like the actual building of the ecosystems and using the organisms inside for experiments. These student driven activities will provide practical experiences to keep my students fall in love with biology and the way of life. The "Wall of Life" will appeal to all student levels. The student will have opportunities for the first time to experience biological concepts in a hands on manner. Students will be able to utilize the organisms and ecosystems to run experiments and explore their ideas about life. As a starting point, we need aquariums and pumps. Who knows, we may even get to the level of raising mice for behavioral experiments!!!
