I teach a first grade class comprised of English Language Learners. My six-year-old students learn to read and write English as they learn the language. Poetry has become a medium to help my students collect, compare and appreciate the language. Very often an English Language Learner speaks with such general words that his or her stories seem dull and uninteresting to the listener. Other times they describe objects they cannot name and their descriptions are almost poetic. For that reason I have incorporated poetry into every day and encouraged my students to collect beautiful words, interesting phrases and poems. I would like to get each child a poetry journal. These journals would not only be a place to collect words but a place to begin to write ideas, poems, new words, and impressions. I want my students to walk around with a poet's eye and ear and have a place to capture it all so that they can share and talk about the language around them. I would like poetry journals from Lakeshore. These books would encourage children not to be ashamed of not knowing new words but to be collectors of them. These books would encourage them to write all the little wonderings that they ponder throughout the day as best they can. These journals would be a reference that they can turn to when they have forgotten what it was they wanted to talk about. Mostly these books will become a journal of all the beautiful words and poems that they write as they learn the English language and learn to use the words as a poet would.
