My students are a creative group of diverse individuals. The one hundred and fifty students who walk through my classroom every week are part of a student body of sixteen hundred. Each student brings their own unique background and personality to the art room to make one-of-a-kind artwork. I believe in incorporating relevance and meaning to student artwork so their artwork is individualized and personal. Students have the opportunity to explore multiple electives, including the art classes I teach, as well as honors and advanced placement courses. Some of those AP classes are in the arts, including AP 2D art and AP 3D art!
Every student is an artist; it's my job to help them figure out what kind of artist they are.
My students are able to pick from a wide range of art classes to take. They participate in stained glass, ceramics, drawing and painting, graphics, videography and photography. A lot of the supplies students use in class are donated from the community. They are a wonderful resource that has had a major impact on the things students are able to learn and create. We also rely on grants to bring new ideas and opportunities to our students.
My Project
My students need a variety of glazes to get creative with their art! Glazing materials are limited in my clay classroom, due to limited funds. I would love to show my students new, unique glazes that could enhance their artwork and take it to the next level. In the fall, I will be teaching three beginning and two advanced ceramics classes, as well as Advanced Placement 3-D Design. My classes are made up of 31 high schoolers each (9-12 graders) that range from students on an IEP, English Language Learners, homeless and gifted students. When we run out of materials, I buy some of the materials out of pocket or students have to use glaze colors that don't match their ideas or glazes of poor quality.
With the addition of more vibrant glaze colors to our inventory, students will have more opportunities to make the ideas they have in their heads become a reality.
I have personally bought higher quality glazes for my students and seeing the end result come out of the kiln lit up their faces. They were so proud of their work and when the other students saw what they made, they all started asking me to pick up more vibrant glazes. I want that excitement and love of creating to continue year-to-year and am so excited to see what my students will come up with next!
