The Very Hungry Caterpillar Meets D.R.E.A.M. Centers!

Help me give my students a class set of The Very Hungry Caterpillar books and a Montessori style art center so they can make creative choices, inspire love of literacy and learning.

My Students

Students in the "highest poverty" category, often do not have opportunities to follow their dreams. I am all about making the impossible possible and their dreams for the future an obtainable reality. My students come from countries around the world. They have traveled from Africa, Asia, South America, and across North America, as children of refugees and families that move frequently, due to low-income earning ability. The unique and difficult experiences of my students are what make my students some of the most powerful and determined young minds you could ever hope to meet.

My students have experienced adversity.

In our classroom, we rise above it. My students are resilient and brilliant. They have incredible leadership abilities. They help each other and understand the power of teamwork. We build a classroom community and care for each other. When one student succeeds, they all celebrate the success achieved by their classmate. These bonds are forged with time, shared tribulation, and the universal truth that every single student in our class has enormous potential.

My Project

In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning.

The Montessori Method of Education, developed by Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children.

Montessori's method has been used for over 100 years in many parts of the world. The goal of this project is to provide Montessori style centers so our ‘general classroom’ students can make creative choices in their learning! The Very Hungry Caterpillar celebrates it’s 50th anniversary this year and will inspire love of literacy and learning. We will provide a take come copy for each student to keep as part of this D.R.E.A.M. Center project! Other choices at the Very Hungry Caterpillar’s D.R.E.A.M Center include fine motor skills practice like tracing and lacing using the velum, tissue paper, and Eric Carle animal tracing cards. It also includes practice for larger motor skills with the alphabet floor puzzle, magnetic characters for storytelling, and Pla-Doh numbers, letters and fun set.

Dry erase boards and markers for the whole class will provide fun, colorful, engagement opportunities for whole class participation. We will create a art garden using the paints and paper-lates. All the lovely items included in this project will be stored in the 10 drawer rainbow hued organizer cart.

This will fulfill the ‘engineering’ element of our Daily Reading Engineering Art and Math (D.R.E.A.M.) Stations by offering students the choice to create a 3-D tissue paper sculpture using marshmallows, toothpicks, glue, and brightly colored tissue paper! I can already imagine the caterpillars, foods, and butterflies our students will engineer as budding artists! Perhaps we have a future international architect among our class, just waiting to be given these tools to imagine, D.R.E.A.M, and create with!
