I have students in grades 9 through 12 who have moderate to severe physical and mental disabilities. Their abilities range from needing one on one support to some who can work independently when given specific instructions. They are all eager to learn and grow and LOVE coming to school every day to discover something new. The ultimate goal is to help them gain as much independence as possible in the classroom so they can be as independent as possible as they become adults.
My Project
This year, at NFHS, our life skills program tripled! We have a huge group of new freshmen who are starting their journeys into becoming young adults. Throughout the year, we have learned about the world around us. As the year starts to come to a close, we would like to acknowledge the true transformation that all of our students have made throughout the year. From freshmen learning how to navigate a much larger school to the seniors transitioning to life after high school, what better way to learn about transformation than by seeing it up close and personal?
With the help of the butterfly kits and other resources, we will be able to show the students how they can start out as one thing but change into something completely different and wonderful.
We are planning to release the butterflies at the end of the year as a way to say farewell and enjoy the new journey that's ahead of our seniors. To make this truly educational, we would like to round out the unit of study by exploring other insects such as ants and ladybugs. With the ant kit, we will discuss how teamwork, dedication, and hard work ultimately pay off in building a better community. Our freshmen are just starting out, and they need to know that they don't have to do it alone. Everyone's better off when working together. We will be able to use the lady bug kit and story to discuss manners and behaviors. We have some students who require a simpler form of instruction, which is why I have asked for the smart shapes sorting house. These students can work on their fine motor skills and shapes in conjunction with the other students' lessons.
