My students need binders, dividers, and other organization supplies like highlighters and folders in order to store their homework and classwork neatly and carefully.

My Students
Have you ever worked so hard on an assignment, only to lose it the day that it's due? Do you remember that feeling of horror, of dread? For my students, that feeling can be daily reality. Organization is a learned skill -- this project will help us teach it.
My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th grade scholars in a self-contained special education classroom.
They all work extremely hard, and are constantly amazing me with their intelligence, grit, and compassion. Last year, 80% of the students in self-contained English grew by nearly two years in phonics and reading comprehension. However, many of the students in my class are still learning fundamental organization skills, which becomes even more difficult when you have disabilities relating to over stimulation and cognitive processing.
My Project
The materials that we are requesting will help us set a clear model for organization that will be used in self-contained English, Science, and Math. Each student will get a binder that will be kept in the classroom, along with a folder for classwork and a take-home folder for homework assignments. Weekly homework charts will be printed on bright green paper so that they are easy to recognize. Each student will also get post-it notes and highlighters in order to help them break down assignment sheets and ask important questions. Due to the high poverty rate of our area, it is not possible for us to send home a list of supplies and expect that each student will be able to bring them to class. Giving the supplies to the students directly will ensure that everyone has what they need in order to learn.
Often times, we think of organization as an inherent trait, rather than a learned skill.
However, studies show that organization is something that can and should be learned, especially in middle school. The donations we are requesting will help our scholars build lifelong organization habits that will carry successfully though middle school, high school, college, and beyond.
