Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day at morning meeting we share how we are feeling that day and why. The majority of my students say they are happy because they are in school. We also share a goal for the day. Again, most of my students say their goal is to get better at reading (or math, or science). They all receive a free breakfast at school, and most of them receive free lunch as well. We are a neighborhood school, and most walk to school with their parents or older siblings. They are truly a great group of kids that want to learn despite some of the daily hardships they may encounter.

My Project

These items will make a difference in my students’ learning because they will be able to respond to reading through writing about what they read (thoughts and reactions), which will enable them to increase comprehension skills. In their math journals, they will write explanations on how they get their answers and draw pictures of math concepts. The journals will help build critical thinking skills that they will need throughout their school lives.

The whiteboards and whiteboard supplies will be used as active engagement in response to questions for quick assessment of the whole class.

Students gain confidence in responding to questions at the same time as their classmates and are more willing to respond rather than being singled out by the teacher.
