Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The arts, as always, are hit the hardest. My students are resilient and generous, though. Every school year they amaze me as they persevere and show patience as we work through the difficulties that come with the life of the lower-income community we call home.
Their attitudes never convey they even know the poverty that surrounds them.
They have donated some supplies out of the goodness of their hearts, seeing there is a need. They would gladly donate more, if they could afford to. They take pride in the work they create and we hope to continue experimenting with and learning about more types of sculpture.
My Project
When did you learn to sew on a button? It seems the act of sewing is becoming something of the past. While my students will be studying the art history of Claes Oldenburg and creating soft sculptures based on the modern style of Takashi Murakami, they will also be learning essential life skills that are generally no longer taught in school.
Do you remember the excitement of learning something new; something that you always wanted to learn?
My students are incredibly excited about the possibilities that this unit brings. We will be learning hand sewing skills, product design skills, and advertising skills, all while sculpting with fabric, needles, and thread.
