This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I treat approximately 40 preschool-aged students who are diagnosed with autism, speech and language impairments, and other Co-morbid disorders. As I enter my second year as newly graduated speech therapist, I am seeking support to ensure that my students receive the highest-quality services they deserve through a Distance Learning platform.

My kiddos are energetic, curious, love to learn, laugh, play, and sing.

Last year, they showed their strengths in being flexible to this new style of teaching as I interacted with them through tele-therapy. Many of them benefit from visual supports, modified books/curriculum, and motivating toys. They also come from a diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, which has unfortunately made it challenging for some families to obtain the resources/services that their more affluent neighborhoods easily receive.

My Project

My students will be learning from home as I provide teletherapy sessions in a group setting.

The microphone will be used to ensure that my students are receiving high-quality audio of speech and language models from me during any live video-conferencing sessions or recordings that I upload onto YouTube/other online platforms.

It would also help ensure that parents and caregivers can hear me when I prompt them to assist their children and/or when I provide them with parent education tips/strategies.

Teachers Pay Teachers is a great online resource for educators to obtain materials that others have created. I plan to use the gift card to purchase thematic digital resources that I can then send to parents both virtually and/or by paper. Some of the themes that I plan to target this Fall include "All About Me", "School/Bus", "Thanksgiving/Food", "Halloween", and "Winter".

The baby doll set and hand puppets will encourage pretend play and target Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as eating, taking a bath, going to potty, getting ready for bed, etc. As we continue to shelter in place, I aim to incorporate these common ADLs into our sessions so that parents can learn how to support their child's speech and language development from their own home.

The magic wand and light-up toys will be used to maintain and grab their attention to speech and language tasks since I am unable to prompt them physically. The sound and light effects will hopefully serve as positive reinforcement and encourage my students to remain engaged in our play-based activities.

Finally, shared-book reading is a great way to target speech and language goals. Not to mention, developing pre-literacy skills including alphabet awareness will prepare my students for elementary school and ensure that they develop their pre-academic skills alongside their same-aged peers!
