My Students
Hello from a small community near Green Bay, Wisconsin (go, Pack, go!) This is my sixth year teaching in my current position as a high school English Language Arts teacher. I consider myself extremely lucky to be in love with going to work every day at an amazing school with dedicated colleagues and energizing students. My students genuinely keep me on my toes; whether it's their quick wit or their thoughtful questions, they challenge me to always be a learner.
The thing I love most about working in education is that there is always more to learn!
Even though I have reached a point in my career where I feel confident in what I am doing, I still desire to push myself further as a learner. Over my eight years of teaching, I have witnessed teachers become stagnant and tired of their curriculum; I am determined to find ways to learn and grow as an educator so that my love of teaching does fade over time.
My Project
The texts that I have selected for professional development are a combination of literary analysis and writing workshop texts. Two years ago, our ELA department underwent significant changes in curriculum progression. Courses became separated by skill rather than grade level; for example, instead of a tenth grade year-long class, we now offer Writing, Literary Analysis, and Speech. With this change, we are now able to focus on developing specific skillsets with our students rather than an all at once approach.
With every new day, we are given the chance to learn something new!
I am a firm believer that it is necessary for educators to continue their own learning in order to be effective in the classroom. It is important for me to continue learning best practices and stay up to date; not only does this benefit my students, it helps me feel engaged year after year. I look forward to reading about new approaches to literary analysis instruction and writing workshop methods in order to further my ability to create a meaningful classroom experience for all students.
