My students need flexible seating, including portable laptop seats they can use while working on Chromebooks and bean bag beads to refill our flattened classroom beanbags.
Our classroom is full of children who want to be successful readers, problem solvers, and thinkers, and we need your help! In our class, we work hard: we THINK, we REFLECT, and we TRANSFORM our learning every day!
We have the drive to become life-long learners, we just need the resources.
Our class is a mixture of students with different strengths and different needs. We are ELL students who need help with vocabulary and experiences. We are students who receive special education services and need specific interventions. We are Title I students (based on our population of students who receive free and reduced-price lunch) who need extra help in reading. We are students who need extra challenges because we have mastered the standard curriculum.
We need the resources to not just learn for today or one year; we need the resources to make learning meaningful and turn us into life-long learners.
My Project
This project is about making our classroom reflect our students. Research shows that choice and comfort are linked to student learning. My school provides a desk and a chair for each student, but that is not enough for the classroom we want to create.
Together, we can create a classroom where students WANT to go to learn, not a place they have to go each day.
I started by buying rugs and cushions from a big box store and was supported with a DonorsChoose project for comfortable beanbag chairs. I found that our students were excited to learn in these alternate comfy spaces. I saw an increase in their willingness to collaborate with other students.
This project continues our classroom transformation by providing student lap desks where students use their core muscles to control the desk and the desks provide a comfortable place to work. It also asks for beans to refill our now flat beanbag chairs, which our students have loved reading and working in until they were completely flattened.
