Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in an urban school district, in a low-income neighborhood, my students need and deserve all the support we can give them. Despite the social and economic forces they may face, I am hoping to create a rich and positive space where they can explore and grow like true mathematicians.
Our students are strong, excited, and sensational learners.
Most of them are English Language Learners, immigrants, or minorities. As 9th and 11th graders, they are at the start of high school careers. What an exciting age to be! As they begin to figure out just what kind of people they are going to be, and how they are going to treat people, I hope to make it clear that no matter what, they are loved and supported by us-by their teachers, and by you all.
My Project
As a math teacher, my goal is to help young people to develop into powerful mathematicians. To do so, our students need only the opportunity to cultivate the creative and resourceful minds that allow them to see their world mathematically.
In my fundraising projects from last year, you all provided my students with essential supplies like tape dispensers, markers, notebooks, and pencils.
I can't tell you how much the students appreciated the pencils! This time, coming back for year two, we only need a handful of exhaustible supplies.
As I push my students to grow as mathematicians, they will need the tools to act as mathematicians. Students will need pencils to write down their ideas. They need tape and notebooks to build a catalog of their journey and mathematical discoveries. Also on this list is a handful of hygienic supplies--because life happens! Our students are humans with human needs. We love our children, we believe in them, and supplies like hand sanitizer and band-aids show our students that we care for them.
These supplies are basic, but essential for young learners, and we as adults must rally around the needs of our youth, to support them in their growth. I want our students to know that if they bring their heart and soul to class every day, then they have everything they need to succeed.
