I teach art in a school with a high povery rate. I am responsible for teaching art history to 600 students a week. I have divided artists into groups so that by the time they finish fifth grade, they have been exposed to a variety of art styles. My first grade students, along with special ed, love to hear stories about artists from long ago. I like to personalize the artists for them through reproductions and books. One of their favorites is Vincent Van Gogh! They can relate to him because he was not a good student in school and had trouble making friends. They like to see paintings that he made in Arles because of the colors that he used- oranges and yellows and reds!
My art room is located in the center of the building with no windows. Across the hall is a door that leads to a small concrete patio. I have created a "pretty place" on the patio that reminds us of the types of flowers Van Gogh loved to paint. The climate here is very similar to the climate in the south of France so we have planted sunflowers, irises, and daisies. This is a great area for me to take my students for drawing and painting. I need materials in my classroom to help my students identify Van Gogh's paintings and to create their own "Van Goghs". I want to have enough books and reproductions of Van Gogh for all of my students to use at one time. With games and puzzles, I will be able to totally immerse them in Van Gogh!
