The Story of Us

My students need America: The Story of Us along with a subscription to Time to help students learn about where they came from and where we are going.

My Students

Many students are not exposed to what is happening in the world today, much less where our society has been! How wonderful for students to read about what is happening around them in a way that relates to them, while exploring history standards in the form of a story about us!

The students I work with are low income students attending a public school.

Our school is currently undergoing transition to become a Title I school, due to so many low achieving, low socioeconomic families we serve. These children often have never been exposed to what is going on in the world outside of their own homes. Many times, their concern lies more about what is going to happen at home, rather than what is happening around them. They often do not understand how world events and current events effect their own lives. These children are hungry to learn, and eager to listen, but with budget cuts, it is hard to engage them without the proper materials!

My Project

If you help fund the video, America: The Story of Us, as well as a classroom subscription to Time for children, I will be able to incorporate fourth grade standards quite easily with the aid of both materials. Students will have the opportunity for their history to come to life in front of them!! Also, they will be able to keep current on important events, such as the oil spill in the Gulf, and how, even though it is miles away, its effects will trickle down and effect each and every one of them.

As a teacher, one of the hardest subjects to get students to become excited about is our nation's history and what is going on in our world, outside of their hometown.

What a gift you would be giving! A gift of the past and the present that will resonate with these students for years to come!! Help me spark something in these young minds today that will last a lifetime!
