My Project
Positive psychology is an evidence-based approach to managing and modeling desired behaviors and choices both on a micro and macro level. Currently, our school has no meaningful school-wide positive behavioral motivation system and, consequently, many problem behaviors. These behaviors are interfering with the academic and cultural environment at the school. Therefore, we propose to implement a school-wide positive behavioral motivation system that will motivate students to make desired positive choices affecting our educational and cultural norms.
To do so we propose implementing a token system where students who are observed or ‘caught’ exhibiting desired behavior by staff will be rewarded with an electronic token that is stored on an app.
For example a student may direct another student to sit down on the bus; or a student who has a history of tardies makes it to class on time or a student picks up trash unsolicited. Such acts, when observed, will be immediately rewarded with a reward token, thus reinforcing the desired behavior. Such tokens can be saved up and cannot be taken. These tokens will be redeemed on the app where a student can ‘buy’ items such as tickets to school events; food; school spirit swag or raffle tickets for large prizes such as a drone. As students who do not engage in positive behaviors see other students achieve positive rewards for their positive behaviors then more students should engage in the desired behavior to earn tokens. As this happens our school culture will gradually shift to one where students self-manage their behaviors and make positive choices around academic; behavioral and social/emotional domains.
To do this we need funds to purchase items for the rewards that the students can buy and this is why we are in need of this grant
