Help me give my students engaging and relevant books and a space to enjoy them! Seeing themselves in the literature they read, such as "The Firekeeper's Daughter" helps encourage students to engage and participate in their own learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing! As part of a small learning community, they have learned the importance and beauty of building strong relationships with both each other and their teachers.
We are so fortunate to be part of such a vibrant and diverse community that gets to learn and grow together.
My students are strong and determined, not letting anything get in their way.
My hope is to help them continue their love of learning for the sake of learning. As a literature lover and teacher, I want all my students to see the importance of literature to themselves, society and the world.
My Project
The requested materials, such as the beanbag and rug will help create a designated place within the classroom that mimics a coffee shop or college library where they can study, engage in scholarly conversation or "check out" books from our carefully curated library. The many books requested are representative of my students culturally and socially, allowing for deeper engagement in literature. Having an entire library that speaks to them and their experiences creates a morsel of interest that we hope to grow over time. Sometimes the idea of college can seem overwhelming and unattainable to my students, providing high interest literature in a cozy space helps transition upper classmen into what college will look and feel like, making it less intimidating once they get there.
