My theatre students are inner city kids trying to build a strong theatre department. We have been producing shows with minimal resources, including a lack of stage management necessities.
The stage manager is the person whom all the actors and technicians come to for help.
We want to make that title as professionally prepared as possible. Some sort of "emergency" always happens backstage. "Where's the mic tape?" "My skirt hem is ripping, Where's the gaff tape?!" Our stage manager should always be to the rescue with their stage manager kit in tow. They should also be ready to "call" the show. This means they have a lot of paper work to do. These supplies will help them organize their prompt book so that they can easily find their cues to tell the other technicians when to do certain things. Highlighters, post-it notes, different colored pens, etc. all help to keep the script in prompt book show-ready order.
