This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember that "Aha" moment when you realized there is something bigger than yourself? Maybe at the top of a building looking down and you realized that there was more than what you knew. My students need that "Aha" moment to see the world around them and I want to do that with books.

My students are overage and under-credited high school students who for various reasons have struggled with traditional education.

In my school we look to reach our students through both traditional and non-traditional ways, and one of the most important themes is showing how what they are doing can connect to them. Many of the students are struggling readers and writers and so I am seeking to find literature they can connect to and become immersed in.

My Project

The traditional canon of literature doesn't always work and so I am trying a new route of bringing in high quality, interesting texts into the classroom. Through independent reading, literature circles, small group, and whole group instruction, I want to use these books to coax my students into the world of not just literature but outside of their neighborhoods and short-sighted view. I want my students to re-define their viewpoint to see there is more than what is directly in front of them and to see opportunities and the potential they have. The books I have chosen are designed to get them to become interactive with both the text and to come up with how they can make a positive impact on the world around them.

Imagine changing a chaotic noise into a synchronous sound for the world to hear and enjoy.

This is what I want to create for my students. Right now they see chaos and struggles in reading; I want to help them see the beauty and wonder in the synchronicity words can become when a reader connects to them and engages actively with the text.
