This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are thirsty for knowledge. They are very willing to learn. We are very fortunate to have a 1:1 initiative in our classroom. We use technology daily. Our textbooks are on-line. Students are excited about getting to use the computers to read in place of hard books.

We are in a very high poverty area.

A lot of houses near the school are boarded up. Our school is very close to a railway yard and several old abandoned commercial buildings. My students are truly awesome learners. They come from very meager backgrounds. Expendable income is not something my student's parents have. They are functioning in survival mode. We are an extremely diverse classroom. I have four different languages, besides English, used in my classroom. These students are thirsty for knowledge. They want to do better and make a better life for themselves. The building our school is in is 104 years old and needs work. The positive thing is, that the students take pride in their school and their education. We are one of the top performing elementary schools in our district.

My Project

Since our textbooks are on-line books, they can be read to my English language learners in English. We also have a computer program to help them learn English. The students currently have the sound turned down low when using these programs, but when 28 students are listening it is hard to focus on your computer and what is being said. They need headphones to be able to hear and understand. This will allow the students to better learn English, Math, Science, Social Studies and to improve their reading.

Donations to this project will help improve the noise level, and limit the distractions that it causes my students.

It will give the students the ability to hear only their computer and concentrate on what they are supposed to be learning. This will improve their reading and speaking of the English language, as well as, their Math skills. Furthermore, they will be able to learn Science and Social Studies with the assistance of the on-line reader if needed.
