Kindergarten classrooms are full of learning through music. We sing songs to help us learn the alphabet, how to spell words, and, of course, we have silly songs to help us get our wiggles out. But we need a bluetooth wireless speaker so we can listen to songs on our classroom iPod.
I teach kindergarten to 24 eager and energetic students who are very excited to be in school for the first time.
Throughout the day, we like to sing songs. We sing songs as we transition from one activity to the next. We sing a special song before snack time and before we leave for the day. We also sing many educational songs to help us learn about kindergarten skills. Music is a great way to keep these young kids interested in school and learning.
Kindergarten has changed since you and I were in school. Kindergarten is much more academic now. By the end of the year, kindergarten students will be reading and writing sentences and doing addition and subtraction math problems. Since our curriculum is so rigorous, it is very important to have ample opportunities for kids to get up and move or sing songs so that they don't get burned out in their first year of school.
My Project
We have a classroom iPod that we have downloaded our current kindergarten CD's onto. But the speaker on the iPod is not loud enough for us to hear the music very well, especially during our "overlap" time when we have 2 classes (about 50 kids) in our room. We are hoping to get a few more CD's to download onto our iPod along with a wireless speaker so that we can hear our classroom music better.
Since the wireless speaker can be used inside and outside, we are hoping to get more movement CD's that we can use outside to supplement our PE program or at recess time. We also would like a beanbag CD since we have beanbags in our classroom but don't have many activities to do with them. Tossing and catching beanbags is a great way for kids to build coordination. Also, we would like a circletime CD that can be used during our "overlap" time when we have about 50 kids in our classroom.
If we are able to get a few more classroom CD's and a wireless Bluetooth speaker that can be used inside and outside, our students will have many more opportunities to sing and move in class.
We feel that the more kids get up and move or sing songs, the more attentive they will be during our instructional time. It is hard for 5 year olds to sit for a 45 minute lesson. But if they can get up and move or sing a fun song part way through the lesson, then they will be more likely to stay focused.
