Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love hands-on activities. Recently, they made dioramas of different habitats. They chose the habitats based on their favorite animals. They were able to do their own research about their favorite animals. One student found out that some giraffes are completely white! Another found that some sharks have no teeth! I love how they made different animals like elephants and cheetahs using playdough.

Besides that, I love how my students take charge of their own learning.

In the past, they have come up with their own science questions to experiment with. In math, they use manipulatives and come up with their own examples of what we learned. The best part is that on Mondays they always take me stories of how they applied something we learned in class while they went out with their parents.

My Project

My goal is for the kindergarten superheroes to make a model of the solar system showing off all they have learned. Today I introduced them to the solar system. They had great questions like "What color are the planets?" and "How many Earths fit inside the Sun?"

Each day I will teach them about one body in the solar system so at the end of the study they can replicate it.

After learning about facts about the sun, each planet, and the asteroid belt, I will make a packet of their finished work. They will color the boards black. They will color the styrofoam balls according to the colors of each planet. (Primary colors will be used the most.) They will glue the planets in order. They will use rocks for the asteroid belt to divide the inner planets from the outer planets.

The boards will be displayed around the classroom and next to the bulletin board outside the classroom. Students will be able to take it home after a week and share their knowledge of the solar system. By donating to this project you will help lay the foundation of scientific mastery at the kindergarten level!
