My Students
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” –Fred Rogers.
In transition to kindergarten, students will explore their world and these materials through their area of expertise: play.
My school is one that promotes love, individual and collective determination, and respect for all from day one.
My students are driven to learn when given the opportunities to explore the world through their natural exploration and curious eyes. I know that many of them learn in different ways, hold different interests, and are drawn to different activities. I know that they are full of enthusiasm and energy (both in body and in spirit) and are working to advocate for their needs when given the right tools. My school is one that provides a wide variety of experiences to cultivate the inquisitive and passionate nature of every one of its students, and this holds especially true for my snakes!
My Project
The beginning of kindergarten is a wonderful time for students because they're just getting acclimated to not only the routines and procedures of the classroom but the materials as well. There are certain manipulatives with particular procedures around set-up, engagement, and clean-up that, when efficiently taught from the beginning of the year, lead to a much easier gradual release of responsibility to the students. This is vital in kindergarten so that they are not confused with new manipulatives introduced throughout the year and so my students take ownership of their classroom.
These materials will give my students the chance to bring their hands back into their learning and exploring!
The sand and water table will pique their multiple inquiries about the natural world, the tabletop magnetic board will allow them to manipulate letters and numbers in a way that I've never done before, and the play cube (when equipped with other sensory materials) will allow my students a space to cool down using all of the strategies they'll be taught.
