My middle school English Learners have been reading, acting, reciting, and, most of all, enjoying the trials and tribulations of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Talk about outrageous fortune! Although we often work from adapted scripts to begin with, my students are more and more comfortable performing in class using scripts based on Shakespeare's original language. It has been amazing to watch them develop their acting ability, vocabulary, and understanding of human nature as we explore Hamlet's story together.
I am requesting graphic novel adaptations, manga versions, and simplified script collections of Hamlet for my students to read to help flesh out the story between the scenes we are exploring together in depth in class.
Graphic novels are appealing to my students and support understanding of challenging vocabulary and archaic language forms. We will read these books together and individually.
