Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need hands on activities to spark and keep their interest. My classes have launched water rockets in the spring for several years. It is always an exciting day for the whole school. I would like to raise the academic bar by allowing students more freedom to experiment.

My school is in California, and my students come from diverse backgrounds.

The biggest obstacle is that almost 90% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. They do not have the resources at home to support their learning. Interest soars when students are given hands-on experiences. I would like to turn a fun project into an active research project.

My Project

Students will work in groups to design and launch their water bottle rockets. Students will measure mass, volume, length, center of gravity, pressure, altitude and flight time. After the first launch they will consider the data and make changes to their rockets. The balance would allow quick data collection for all the groups. Two launchers will allow for more tests during a class period. This activity will combine the units, Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions with Engineering Design. Since this is such a high interest activity I envision revisiting the activity several times over the course of the year. These materials will be used by students for years to come.

Since many of my students have limited resources and experience at home, this project will provide them all with a fun academic challenge.

I want my students to develop confidence in their ability to rise to the challenge. They will be given the opportunity to use science data to solve a problem in which they are interested. An engineering career may seem more interesting and possible. Projects like this build positive school memories and enthusiasm for learning.
