I have a group of 34 fifth graders who come from a variety of different backgrounds. Over half of my students are English language learners, and they have made huge improvements in their English skills. They are all eager to learn and enjoy coming to school every day.
My school is located in a mixed economic area in Sacramento.
Many of my students are being raised by single mothers or fathers and they have limited access to materials after school is out.
We are working hard on establishing a growth mindset with our students so that they know they can accomplish anything they put their minds to.
My Project
My 5th graders love to play basketball. They do not enjoy reading and studying poetry. I am looking to change that by getting a poetry collection that will connect to their lives.
Never let anyone lower your goals.
Others’ expectations of you are determined by their limitations of life. The sky is your limit, sons. Always shoot for the sun and you will shine.
-Kwame Alexander.
This novel will be added to my collection of books and will be the first full poetry book that I will have. Students will be able to find a poem that speaks to them, memorize it, and then recite it for the class. We will then write our own poems based on Kwame Alexander's style of poetry.
