My students need a camera, tablets and novels to create digital artifacts: digital stories from literature, poetry photo essays. They will use technology for vocabulary.
My students have the capacity to soar freely, confidently and knowledgeably as they embark on their goals and missions in life. They desire better, but the wings of literacy are clipped and while flight is still possible, it is thwarted. But we live by the attitude that "Impossible is nothing!"
My students are 150 of the most talented students on the planet, yet, their underexposure to life outside of their urban communities stifle their voices and do little to challenge their academic creativity.
My students are fascinating. They hail from various parts of the world. They are energetic about their future and excited about setting goals this year. Having worked hard as sophomores, my students have increased their reading proficiency. I want to maintain that momentum and address other areas where improvement can be made, notably literacies related to writing and technology. Many of my students are children of Hispanic and Haitian immigrants and are reconciling their home language with English. A majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch and live in single-family households. Many of them have also lost a loved one or friend to violence. I understand because I was one of them. I desire to engender confidence, collaboration, and creativity in our workspace.
My Project
The Vision: The digital artifacts that we will create with the camera and tablets comprise of stories from literature and poetry as well as photo essays that document students’ academic experiences electronically. The tablets and novels will be used in Literature Circles where students contract with each other to read and discuss novels they agree on. They can house hundreds of titles where our classroom space is at a premium. The tablets will also help students build their vocabulary and test taking strategies for ACT/SAT exams using game apps. In January, students will begin preparing a college portfolio that, when complete by June, will serve to assist in applying for college during the early admissions period. To prepare for that, students will use the tablets to research colleges and careers in small groups. We will record students in mock college and/or career interviews in order to critique their body language and improve on their articulation when answering questions.
My 11th graders have 173 more days of Junior Year.
They will be able to discern the strategies that industry professionals use for creating various types of media and its affect on their intended audiences. They will learn how to apply these effects to their own projects, and to evaluate information with a critical eye. The goals of this project are: to motivate, challenge and endear students to the creative processes of various literacies, and to regenerate those clipped wings to soar.
