Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
If you could go back in time to your high school days and take a class on how to be a successful student, what difference do you think it would have made in your academic career? If we want students to be successful, what tools are there to help them do it?
I teach 9th/10th grade history to an international community of students.
All of our students are recent immigrants from over 20 countries who have been in the country for less than 4 years. My students are some of the hardest working, bravest, and most resilient I know. In addition to dealing with the regular stress of being teenagers, my students have to adapt to a new culture, environment, and learn English all within four to five years to graduate. For many, college is their goal. For some, just graduating high school is a struggle because of low literacy skills, deep social emotional challenges, or financial obligations to their family. However despite the inherent cultural, social, and economic obstacles we have an above average graduation rate. Many of our students come in angry, lost, scared, confused, and alone, but leave determined, confident, and poised to succeed. But those numbers could always be higher.
My Project
I am requesting these student planners for my students to teach them that the fruits of success begin with good basic work habits and study skills. At the core are the fundamental skills of planning, organization, preparation, and prioritizing. Many of my students lack these skills because they were never taught. This is why these skills must be introduced and taught from day one before they learn any content material because the sooner they apply them into their everyday school life, the better prepared they will be for the real world. These planners will be an integral part of their regular content classes as well as a part of their independent study classes. The students will be required to write down their daily homework assignments, plan for upcoming projects, schedule in time to study and review classwork on a consistent basis for all of their classes.
By donating to this project students will have access to a simple but extremely necessary tool to help cultivate discipline, responsibility, autonomy, and ownership of learning.
Through these planners students will learn that success does not come from sheer intelligence or natural ability, but rather from a routine of good habits and perseverance over a long period of time. Having these planners ready on the first day of school will be a great first step for the upcoming school year.
