This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Significant cognitive delays, Emotional disturbances, Sensory impairments, and Multiple disabilities. This year, our school has decided to put on a spectacular like no other based on the movie “Shrek. Our students will be producers, actors, writers, stage hands, and will be building this play from the ground up.
As we have seen COVID-19 has had a severe negative impact on a student’s social-emotional well-being, and academic achievement.
Not to mention the toll COVID-19 has taken on school budgets across the country. We in District 75 support the most challenging of children academically, socio-emotionally, and physically across the New York City public school system.
We find ourselves struggling to acquire necessary resources to support our play and along with it our young creators. COVID-19 has stagnated our student’s social emotional growth and even worse for many has caused regression. For our student’s this play is a means to be a part of a greater community where they can share, learn, and grow with others again. Please help us, the show must go
My Project
The 2020-2021 school year has been like no other due to the fight against COVID-19. COVID-19 has put more than 6ft of distance between friends, family, learning, and much needed supports.
Sudden change for students with autism, like switching to remote learning, has been a massive mental shock and has forced many of them to regress back into isolation.
So changes like the switch to remote learning due to COVID-19 has placed a cloud of unfamiliarity and stress upon our students' minds which has severely impacted the way they interact with their lives. Our students are struggling to connect with others and their creative skills.
I see this struggle and hope to use this performance as a way to help our creative students decompress, express how they feel, and reconnect with one another. With these requested resources we hope to enhance our costumes, and create stronger sets.
All costumes will be made by students. Students will paint their own design onto fabric (t-shirt,sweats,etc.) using tulle for added effect. Students will learn to express ideas respectfully with one another to assemble backdrops and organize props. This will also give students an opportunity to collaborate and socialize with friends they haven't been able to be around since March 2020. Also through our designing of costumes and sets we hope to teach students ways to cope through conversation and imagination. Through this SEL project not only will we teach students the value of community and collaboration amongst peers, but also put on a high quality performance.
