The Sharkspeare Drama Club West Side Story Set Supplies
Help me give my students the materials to create scenic flats for the production, so they can make them professional grade and reusable for future productions.
My drama club students are very dedicated and want to work hard to have the best production possible. We are currently in rehearsal for West Side Story. The play will be performed on March 8-10. Fortunately, we have a booster club that was able to help with our production costs to MTI for royalties, scripts, sound track, etc. But they are currently out of funds to assist us with the set construction.
My students are very excited about the first musical to be produced in our new theater.
They want it to be a production of which they can be proud. They have totally dedicated themselves to the outcome of the project and have already spent many hours in rehearsal to reach their goal. With your help, we can make sure the set is top quality and gives the audience an experience they won't forget.
My Project
The Islands High School Sharkspeare Drama Club students will learn how to build theatrical flats with the Donors Choose supplies. We will use the flats for our production of West Side Story, and they will be recycled for future productions. This is an excellent way for students to learn how to create theatrical scenery from start to finish.
Students will be creating professional grade theatrical flats for scenery in West Side Story, to be reused for future shows.
They will start by building the flat frames with 2 x 4 x 8 wood studs. Then, they will learn how to attach the muslin to the frame using the staple gun. Once the fabric is attached they will size the muslin with the white latex paint, so that the fabric will hold the scene paint. Our art department students will paint the flats to represent four different scenes: Maria's bedroom, Doc's pharmacy, The Dress Shop, and graffiti for the street scenes. The last touch will be to connect 4 flats in groups of 4 with hinges and put them on casters. The flats will be turned to the correct scene by rotating them on the casters.
The wonderful thing about these items is that they will be used not only for our production of West Side Story, but also for future productions because once the flats are created they can be repainted and used again. Please help us out with this aspect of our production and future productions. Set construction is very expensive, and we do not have the funds to create a high quality set.
