The Sensory Path to Whole Brain Learners

My Students

Our school is located just a few miles from the beach and is blessed to be a part of a large beach community with a small hometown feel. Our school is large and diverse. We have about 850 students that range from general education to special service needs including Participatory Level Academics, Support Level Academics, Behavior Support, Vision and Hearing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech/Language Therapy. The great diversity of our student population creates a need for these support services and individual education plans.

While our large student population has great diversity, our students are all the similar in needs for social-emotional and physical development.

All of our students benefit from active engagement and sensory integration.

My Project

Our school works to develop the whole child. Physical, social, and emotional learning can be found throughout the day in our classrooms. As a school that is always looking for new techniques and strategies with all students including those with ADHD and ADD needs, we would like to continue to develop the whole child with a sensory path for our students to use to connect their brains and bodies!

From frog hops to the loopy ladybug line, this interactive path takes kids through a field of learning and sensory integration!

Students will walk along the daisy while practicing to count, frog jump from log to log and then stretch to step from lily pad to lily pad, white and black dots help children to learn controlled breathing to active their minds, along with lots of other self-regulation techniques to integrate their brains and physical control.

The Sensory Paths are designed to change the child’s body position as he/she completes the course, it has the child focus on academic visuals, while moving the body in a specific order. As the child moves through the path, the body movements slow down or speed up, but work towards giving the proper sensory input without overstimulating the student. The paths are all designed by using research-based sensory integration therapy techniques to decrease sensory seeking behaviors and increase cognition.
