Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a Life Skills Special Education classroom at an elementary school in Austin, TX. What is a Life Skills classroom? Well, my students are learning daily life skills. Things that most of us do without thinking each day. My students are working on executing everyday functional tasks like bathroom and classroom routines/procedures, developing social skills, increasing communication, working on self-regulation, following directions, making effective decisions, etc. A strong focus in this program is also on functional academics in Reading and Math. Students that fall into this program are performing three or more grade levels under their same-aged peers in academics and adaptive skills.

And although they need quite a bit of help on a day-to-day basis, my students are go getters!

They always try their absolute best and don't give up. They are an amazing group of kids and I'm proud to be their teacher. They come to school ready to learn each day with smiles on their faces. My students often seek the acceptance of others (like any other kid does). They want to be included and be able to do everything their same-aged peers can do. They just need a little extra help.

My Project

Building effective sensory processing skills are important, because it affects self-regulation, attention, skill mastery, and behavior. Children that have an efficient processing system are able to attend to instruction which helps them succeed academically. Students that have sensory processing difficulties have a hard time retaining information, demonstrate problematic behavior, and have poor social skills.

Many of my students lack sensory processing skills that significantly affect their overall functioning in their environment.

The materials I've chosen for this project will help my students develop these skills and lead them on the path toward independence. The sensory processing system is the foundation to many other skills. My students will develop fine and gross motor abilities, learn to regulate their emotions/behavior, increase their attention, and build on their social and communication skills.

I provide a structured learning environment for all my students. They have very high needs in almost every area of their lives (if not all). Fulfilling this project will give me the tools I need to help my students be successful. Help me guide them on their journey to independence.
