About My Students

The JFM National Junior Honor Society and Student Council come together to complete a community service activity. The presidents of the groups brought their 22 inner city students together to create the best project this school has ever participated in.

They immediately began reaching out to other teachers and researching ideas and costs to host the prom. As their mentor, I am excited to see how they have really put the seniors first. Even the music they were looking up was from decades ago geared toward the liking of the seniors. As an educator, I feel it is important that students should be exposed to as many different life experiences possible to become a well rounded person.

My students will develop leadership skills that will follow them throughout their life. They will apply mathematical and communication skills to budget and plan the event for the seniors. Students will learn to compromise and work together to reach a common goal. They will learn they do not have to get along with everyone they work with, but they must respect one another and each other’s ideas and opinions. Compromising is a key to success. My students will use these skills to be successful in college and in their careers. Students will begin to fully understand what it means to empathize with others. By putting themselves in someone else’s shoes, they will gain a new perspective on life. During Thanksgiving, my students took charge of our annual food collection. They made a total of 30 baskets to give to needy families. Unfortunately, the students were not able to see the direct impact their generosity and hard work had on these families. This experience will let them see their impact.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to give back to the senior citizens who have developed Jersey City. We are trying to be role models for our fellow peers. We want them to recognize the importance of giving back to those who gave to us.

We are going to learn how to dance to music from past decades. We are going to create a playlist with music from previous decades. We are going to buy the decorations to display at the senior citizen's center. We are going to be making corsages together as students.

This project is important to us and our school community because we can learn from others in a whole new perspective while gaining wisdom from the elders in hope of bridging the gap between generations. The problems we will face is dancing to music from the previous decades and connecting with the elders. A challenge we will face is making the corsages out of tissue paper. On the other hand, we assure we will overcome the obstacles we are going to face.
