My Students

As a special education teacher, I get to work with a wide variety of individuals. My students come from all types of backgrounds and with many different exceptionalities, from autism, to learning disabilities, to brain disorders, and more. It is a dynamic group and each person in the classroom has something to offer every other person.

Teaching these students from 6th-8th grade allows me to watch them grow and gives me the great privilege of being a part of their development as learners and as citizens.

My Project

Many of our students struggle with having positive peer relationships. They are unsure of how to interact with one another or struggle to find appropriate and supportive friends. Many are bullied or teased about being in special ed, and they either become angry and frustrated or turn to bullies themselves.

Some of our students also struggle academically, not because they are not gifted or intelligent, but because they process information differently or at a slower rate.

This leads to frustration and anger as well, and the students struggle to understand their own emotions or with how to communicate those thoughts and feelings to adults.

We are looking to bolster our social skills curriculum in a fun and engaging way that the students will buy into and be willing to participate in. I've selected some texts with lessons and activities that will help us develop a comprehensive program that will meet the needs of our very diverse group of students. We appreciate any and all support!
