Young. Resilient. Flexible. Inspiring. Those are the words that our students embody each and every day. A new elementary school in New York City, we're in the process of adding a grade of students every year. Currently only pre-kindergarten through third grade, our school houses primarily young learners.
Whether remotely, in school part-time, or in school full-time our students make the best of their schooling to socialize, create positive experiences, and grow.
Three out of the four years our school has been operating, we've been affected by COVID-19. These unforeseen circumstances coupled with conflicting priorities in our limited school budget have made it difficult to support our students in their learning.
My Project
Learning to read is something that is grounded in science. There are research based methodologies that we use to help our students become literate. The science of reading supports phonics in action applying rules we learn in phonics to help support our reading abilities.
With these books, our students will take their first steps as readers as they work to read books!
Our youngest learners will be able to make their way through a whole book and feel that sense of accomplishment as they read independently!
In the classroom, we'll be using these books for independent reading time as well as to create baggies of books that the students can bring back and forth to school to show off their reading skills at home, too! Our youngest learners will learn that reading is a skill that we can learn, practice hard at, and succeed at when given the right books!
