Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am privileged to teach math and science to 45 ethnically diverse fourth graders. Most, 93.8%, come from financially challenged households. The majority will enter fourth grade reading and writing below grade level. Conversely, in math, approximately 82% perform at or above grade level. Yet, one trait each has in common - in varying degrees - is a willingness to learn more, a sincere desire to grow stronger academically. Therefore, with targeted, literacy-based opportunities, I expect each to improve in reading and writing, as well as math and science, throughout the year - whether face-to-face or remotely.

Literacy is fundamental to ALL learning, requiring that students are generously skilled to read with comprehension, write, speak, and understand the spoken word.

When appropriately motivated, students' eagerness will move them to pursue literacy and learning in all disciplines.

My Project

A class set of the children's novel by Peter Brown, The Wild Robot, will make an indelible difference in my students' learning: at home, at school, now, and into the future. The story elements (re: character(s), setting, plot...) will surely capture the attention of my 4th grade readers! Each chapter presents an invitation to receive and make academic connections to the sciences, as well as other subjects. From the beginning, Roz, The Wild Robot, finds herself in a saga of unanticipated circumstances that not only reinforce scientific concepts, but also respect, cultural diversity, and compassion for others. This makes the novel, The Wild Robot, a compelling winner both academically and inter-personally!
