My students need lab supplies including pH paper, microscope slides and cover slips, and wall posters to support science curriculum in two units: acids and bases as well as a unit on cellular structure and function for the purpose of using a microscope to discover the cell, meiosis and mitosis.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Currently, I teach middle school (6th, 7th, and 8th grade) science to African-American at-risk students who live in an impoverished urban community in the inner city.
Teaching science is extremely challenging when lab supplies are scarce. I am in the process of building a science curriculum in which I am able to provide hands-on learning opportunities on a continuum, but supplies are a necessity to be successful. The students are suffering because they are not being challenged daily due to the fact that they are not able to make wet mount slides (using plastic slides and coverslips) and look at prepared slides which capture mitosis and meiosis.
I need materials which support the inquiry units to be taught on "Distinguishing between Acids and Bases" as well as "Cell Structure and Function", including Meiosis and Mitosis (wet mount and prepared slides). Students will develop a deeper understanding and interest in science, and looking forward to coming to science class everyday - excited about the learning taking place. In addition, they will retain more scientific knowledge which ensures their preparedness as they transition into college.
Your assistance with this project will maximize student opportunities for collaborative groups, hands-on learning in science, and ensure preparedness for the ISAT science test and high school. In addition, my students will make connections in science to real life situations and daily experiences that will surely positively impact their retention and build knowledge that they will carry with them for a lifetime.
