Does it pay to fight for what you believe in? This is the question that my students are attempting to answer. As we go into a new marking period, we do not have enough money in the school budget to purchase more books.
My 9th grade students are Arts majors in New York City.
Due to the ever increasing costs to keep Arts schools open, the school's extra funds often go to purchasing the supplies that the children would not be able to otherwise afford for their majors. Which means that after the book orders are complete in the Spring, there is not always enough money left over in the Fall to order more.
My Project
I am a new teacher at this school and I am teaching my students how to seek answers to some of life's essential questions through literature. The question that we are asking ourselves, "Does it pay to fight for what you believe in?"
At the beginning of the Second Marking Period we will begin to ask ourselves, "Does it pay to lie to yourself?", in order to further explore our essential question.
We will do this with the Documentary Novel, Nothing but the Truth, by Avi. In addition to helping us with our question, this text exposes the students to different types of documents, helping them to further understand primary and secondary resources.
Unfortunately, I only have enough books in the school to allow two of my four classes to have a copy that they can take home. Which means that none of the students will be able to take their book home and practice reading on their own because I will need to keep the copies in the classroom for all of the classes to have access to them.
Many of my students do not have the funds to purchase the text on their own.
The libraries only allow the students to keep the book for two weeks and we will be using it for six weeks. It would be wonderful if each of my students could have a copy of the book to take home so that they can read at home and practice reading on an individual and personal level.
