The Sad Non-Fiction

My students need 7 sets of nonfiction books for our classroom library.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. McNew's classroom raised $419

My Students

We have literally read our library to bits. OK, not literally. Well, yes literally in some cases. We need some new non-fiction books for our classroom. The ones that are left are beat up or sadly outdated. I don't want them reading about the exciting worlds of East and West Germany.

Here's the deal.

My school is the real international school. We have a heavy draw from the inner city and from the international district. We have pot lucks that you would not believe. Food and families from all over the country and all over the world. We work hard to keep out school going but it is really getting harder. More parents are struggling for work and health care while more cuts are keeping resources and human support out of our building. It can be depressing but working in such a vibrant and alive school keeps everyone energized. My second grade class works hard and never stops.

My Project

We don't get many new things at my school. Sure, I can dig up books and I have for the last many years. I have shelves and shelves of slightly bent crumpled and torn texts. I also have the other boxes that I save for art projects because they are too far gone. Now I want some new books for my kids. I want shelves of new books instead of one or two texts. I want my class to read about robots, and culture, the arts, the bottom of the ocean, and about scientists who are still alive. I know non-fiction can really be the one thing that turns some kids on to reading. This is so much more likely to happen if the books are not taped up and have nice photographs.

You can help kick start interests that could last a lifetime.

It sounds heavy handed but don't you remember some of the great books you read in second grade or the great books you read to someone else? These books will help teeny kid research projects get going. They will be shared in partner reads. Really, is a nice set of books too much to ask for? Give us a hand and we will promise to make sure the students pay it back when they are adults and able to help others. Deal?
