My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and attend a school that focuses on project-based learning. As such, they are accustomed to working on collaborative projects and taking deep dives into several areas of our curriculum, including literature, history and art.

My students are at a dynamic age; they inquisitively view the world through lenses that are both curious and magical.

As their teacher, I am constantly exploring new ways to keep them enthusiastically engaged in all that we do. They always bring a lot to the table and never cease to amaze me.

My Project

My students study the history of Islam, as part of their history curriculum in California. Like other subjects, I always try to find ways to incorporate a deep dive into history with a modern context. Reza Aslan's book is adapted for young readers and does a good job of explaining the life of Muhammad, the Sunni-Shia split and more.

It is very important that young people have the knowledge and perspective to discuss and learn about issues that permeate their loves.

Learning about Islam and other world religions, is on the forefront of this challenge. When my students encounter issues on the news, or in a high school or college course, I want them to have background knowledge that enables them to engage in meaningful ways.
