My Students

I want to move my students from simple text understanding to literary analysis. To do this, I have to find ways to connect the ancient Anglo-Saxon epic quest/hero with modern heroes and quests. By combining the old with the modern, students will deepen their understanding of the quest, even today!

My students are smart, interested, and in their final year of high school!

76% of them live in poverty. I work with Hispanic students and Native American students. We have the highest homeless rate in Oregon. Many of my students are in foster care. They are not classified as "advanced" or "honors" students, but they have their own gifts. They understand challenges and obstacles; some of them are already parents, others have an easier life and are looking forward to attending a two-year college.

My Project

Through an examination of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, students will be able to engage in higher level writing activities and discussions about tough issues such as altruism and what it really means to help others. They will learn how to engage in a Socratic seminar to discuss theme and characterization in the novel and what it means to be selfish or altruistic. We will use other non-fiction articles to examine selfishness, altruism and issues related to global climate change; all themes in McCarthy's The Road. We will use this learning as a springboard for an inquiry based project in which students will work collaboratively to research organizations and individuals engaged in altruistic activities that benefit people or the environment. The project will culminate in a formal presentation during which students will present their findings to their peers.

Today's students face a world that is rapidly changing.

Many students are disillusioned and do not see the good work that people and organizations do to help people and the planet. I believe my students will be inspired to do what they can for others and for our planet by understanding what is at stake if we choose to live a selfish life and what is to be gained by engaging in activities to help others and our world.
