This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Don't teach your children to never be angry, teach them how to be angry" - Lyman Abbott.
The students in my school live in urban areas with limited opportunities.
My students are facing so many "grown up" issues and have a hard time handling these situations. My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds, not only their race and SES, but also regarding family dynamics, and their emotional support/development. Many of my students come to school eager to learn each day. However, some students come to school facing much bigger challenges than we can ever imagine, and at times, their emotional battles prevent them from focusing, understanding, and retaining the important lesson their teacher is trying to teach them.
From kindergarten to 5th grade, I see students who struggle with high anxiety, parental discord, managing their anger and impulses, and getting along with their peers. My students need a fun and engaging way to learn how to deal with their emotions in a nonthreatening environment. They need opportunities to learn and practice making good choices all day long!
My Project
The resources I am requesting will enhance students' ability to manage their anger and frustration, impulsive behaviors, depression and anxiety. The space I will create will allow students a place to de-escalate when they are having a difficult time in the classroom. I am requesting board games, activity guides and books to teach anger management and social skills,as well as sensory objects and relaxation materials These resources will assist students to learn the skills needed to appropriately manage the negative emotions they are experiencing. I will also use these materials in group counseling sessions with students who struggle with appropriate social skills, conflict resolution, and self-monitoring behaviors.
This project will impact my elementary school as a whole as the relaxation space will be available to all students.
Currently, the school is facing major budget cuts and have limited means to provide opportunities for students beyond the academic curriculum. My students have difficult lives and desperately need to learn coping and social skills that will assist them throughout their life. Students will learn important life lessons and skills that they are unable to receive in the classroom.
