The students in my school live in urban areas with limited opportunities. My students are facing so many "grown up" issues and have a hard time handling these situations. My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds, not only their race and SES, but also regarding family dynamics, and their emotional support/development. Many of my students come to school eager to learn each day. However, some students come to school facing much bigger challenges than we can ever imagine, and at times, their emotional battles prevent them from focusing, understanding, and retaining the important lesson their teacher is trying to teach them. From kindergarten to 5th grade, I see students who struggle with high anxiety, parental discord, managing their anger and impulses, and getting along with their peers. My students need a fun and engaging way to learn how to deal with their emotions in a nonthreatening environment. They need opportunities to learn and practice making good choices all day long!
