This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Seven years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarteners students get the amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
My Project will provide the right tools for my students from day one in kindergarten. They will all have access to high quality writing tools to use through out the school year. At the end of the year, they will be able to take home their pouches and pencils to continue with their learning.
My students will benefit from having the proper writing tools in the right place from day one.
Fine motor skills, phonics and learning in two languages will have the biggest impact with this project. My students come eager to learn to write their names, letters, sight words, sentences and paragraphs and they even get to write their first bilingual books in kindergarten. It all starts with the right tools such pencils and pencil pouches for all of their writing tools. Also, they will have the opportunity to use the clipboards to practice writing: either on a paper or on the actual board with dry erase markers.
My students will learn how to stay organized and take care of personal writing materials from the first day in kindergarten with the help of the pencil pouches. They will be able to keep their writing tools such as pencils, erasers, crayons, and sticky notes in their individual pouches. This will allow them to stay focus in their writing and phonics skills. It will be prevent students from wasting valuable time looking for pencils or other writing materials. There will be times when they still share community materials that will be be used as often to provide positive and ongoing opportunities for sharing.
