My first grade students are enthusiastic to come to school and learn. First grade is a year full of growth. It is exciting and fulfilling to work with children as they become readers, writers, mathematicians and so much more! The children in my classroom are from a variety of backgrounds including high income and low income, English and Spanish speaking, and ethnically diverse. Some children have two parents in the home, some have only one parent in their home and some are raised by grandparents or guardians. They come to school full of energy and wonder.
Writing is a constant activity in first grade. We write in every subject and need to have well developed handwriting habits.
This project will provide tools to help children develop the correct grip, have well sharpened pencils, a place to keep their pencils, and a good resource to model proper handwriting.
An electric pencil sharpener means sharpened pencils will be at the ready at all times. First graders push hard when they write and so they break their pencils frequently. Having a quality sharpener means I can easily sharpen pencils quickly. Pencil grips can help kids develop that proper grasp of the pencil. Developing the proper grasp is a task that first grade teachers focus on quite a bit in first grade. It is easier to help them develop the proper grip rather than later correcting an improper grip. Proper grips keep the children from getting too fatigued too quickly. Having a wide variety and assortment means I can trade them out when one grip doesn't quite work for a specific student as well as make it possible to have enough for when I need to sanitize them periodically.
For some students, a special pencil like the "rocket" pencil forces them to adapt to holding the pencil correctly regardless of their already established habit.
