I teach a group of special needs sixth grades who are eager to learn, but endure great challenges being away from the classroom. Now that we're engaging in distance learning, my students still wake up on time to get the school day started at 8:00 AM as if they were coming in for a regular school day. When they're not in the online classroom, they reach out to each other to assist with completing assignments and turning them in on time.
My student's willingness to learn through online instruction, encourages me to prepare more live interactive lessons to keep them involved.
Using different online tools to prepare for that type of instruction is a challenge if the equipment we have is not capable of doing so.
Having a good computer will make student learning more productive, because I won't have to worry about my computer stalling or crashing in the middle of a lesson. A week ago, I was conducting a live lesson with my class when the pages stopped loading. After struggling to complete the lesson with the class, I had to end the live lesson and assign it as a student paced lesson, where students had to try and complete the assignment on their own.
After trying to get my laptop restarted, my programs started slowing down and eventually my computer crashed.
For the days that followed, I had to assign student paced work from different websites while I wait for tech support. I'm currently using a basic laptop which limits the applications I can use, because of it's slow processor. With two more months of school to go, there's so much more teaching and learning to take place. Having the right technology to do it will really make the difference.
