The Right Book Changes Everything

My students need 50 young adult books for our classroom library including books from the Bluford High and the Drama High series.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Almagor's classroom raised $583

This project is fully funded

At KIPP DC: AIM Academy, kids and adults are doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to close the achievement gap!!!!! Our students come in WAY behind grade level... but they attend school from eight until five every day, plus every other Saturday, plus most of the summer, plus two hours of homework a night, plus reading at every spare moment... and they catch up. (If you're interested in the numbers: The first class of KIPP DC alumni went from the 23rd to the 74th percentile in reading and the 34th to the 96th percentile in math between fifth and eighth grade. Around the 70th percentile is considered on track for college.)

Our kids make so much progress because they truly see themselves and their friends as readers. They read before school, during meals, between activities, and even while walking in the hallways. (The occasional collision or chocolate-milk-stained page -- totally worth it!) They form long waiting lists for new books and pass notes revealing exciting lines and assign favorites to their friends -- "You've gotta read this!"

So how do we get them there? Well -- the first step is falling in love. If I can match a student with the book that speaks specially to him or her -- the book that makes him or her plead for five more minutes of reading time, and shush friends who interrupt reading with conversation, and get busted for reading under the desk during math class -- the book he or she finishes easily in under a week before returning for "another one just like this!" -- then I know I'll never need to explain the power of words or the magic of stories. I can guide that kid to similar books, and then slightly more challenging books, and then a whole universe of styles and flavors. The rest is easy!

But of course that one right book is different for every child and not always obvious. Your help will enable me to stock a wide array of impossible-to-put-down novels -- for boys, for girls, for strong readers, for beginners, for those who love drama and for those who love to laugh -- to give each of my students the chance to fall in love.
