My Students
Have you ever read a book that completely changes your life? The vast majority of my students have never had the opportunity to even read an entire book, much less, had one change their life. My goal for next year is to have each of my students find and read a book that changes their life.
I am an English teacher and avid reader in a miniature farming town in rural Virginia.
We don't have access to a bookstore or even a decent library. My school is unable to provide my students and me with the resources that I think would benefit my students for their entire lives. Due to this lack of access to books, many of my students have told me that they have never read an entire book, just excerpts of novels from textbooks.
My Project
I have spent the last few years agonizing on how to rectify this situation, when finally the answer came to me! If I found access to a way to present a variety of classic, yet fun, books on cd, my class would be able to read more than just excerpts from textbooks.
After many hours of polling, researching, and careful consideration, I believe that I have put together a group of books that will undoubtedly be able to spark a life changing moment in even the most resistant of readers.
I plan to place all the cds onto the ipod so we can listen to the books together in class and keep the cds on hand for students to check out if they are absent, or just can't WAIT to find out what happens next in the story.
In the coming school year my students will not only read through an entire book, for the first time in their lives, they will have read SEVEN classic, fun, and life changing books.
