My Students
I service a community of students that are diverse socially, economically, and academically. They are highly inquisitive, have a strong commitment to investigating, pursuing, and seeing social justice, in its various forms, activated in their personal and public lives.
Students see this pursuit in their academic lives by being active in various student-led initiatives: a sit-in to protest police brutality, poetry, visual arts, and music, open mic/poetry cafe to bring attention to unheard or underrepresented voices within and outside the school community.
Students are empathetic and look for ways their academic studies are realized in the real world.
My Project
The No Fear Shakespeare books are a great tool for helping to demystify the language that many students struggle with when looking at Shakespeare. Through the use of this book students will gain an insight to some meanings that may otherwise be overlooked.
As we look to argue about Shakespeare's relevancy in the 21st century, they will draw on their experience with producing mini-performances of the work to analyze their own understandings of the work in our current lives.
Often when students hear we are studying Shakespeare, I am met with groans, or the immediate 'I don't like Shakespeare, it's confusing." My goal is to help students gain different, deeper respect for the work regardless of the position they establish about the relevancy of Shakespeare in the 21st century.
