My Project

Calm-Down Corner Funding Request Statement

I am requesting to create a dedicated Calm-Down Corner for my first-grade classroom in West Philadelphia.

I currently serve 19 brilliant, energetic, and academically strong scholars, many of whom require additional emotional support throughout the school day. Several of my students receive special education services, and a number of them are navigating trauma, behavioral challenges, or significant environmental stressors outside of school.

While my students excel academically, they often need a safe and structured space where they can regulate their emotions, process big feelings, and return to learning successfully. A Calm-Down Corner would provide them with developmentally appropriate tools such as sensory items, coping strategy visuals, soft seating, mindfulness activities, and reflection prompts.

This space will play a critical role in:

Supporting the emotional well-being of students with IEPs

Providing trauma-informed care within the classroom

Reducing behavioral incidents and disruptions

Increasing time-on-task and academic engagement

Creating a safe environment where all learners can thrive
