This is my 22nd year as a teacher in a small, high-need school community. I have recently moved from middle school to be a 4th grade teacher in an elementary school. I have learned quickly that there is a big difference in middle school and elementary students. Elementary students love recess and can't wait to be outside to enjoy a game of ball, while middle school students would rather stand around if they have to go out. This observation is what prompted my decision to do this particular project.
My students have recess within the last 30 minutes of the school day and have no other outlet for their energy except PE twice a week. Recess is their time to let off energy. They enjoy organized sports games, such as kickball, base/softball, and football. The problem is that they have to beg or borrow a ball to play and they don't have bases. They use a tree for homeplate, the end of a bench for first, a basketball pole for second, and a patch of grass for third. Not all students get to participate because of the number of students already playing.
My students need their own classroom sports equipment(bases, goals, bats and various types of balls)so they can enjoy recess in a safe way. If we had our own set of equipment, I could use extra recesses as a reward for good behavior and grades.
Your help will enable my students to not only enjoy recess, but help them learn about different sports, keep them fit, and teach them about sportsmanship.
